Kym Song Witherspoon, a long-time resident of Woodbridge, Virginia, known as ‘Ms.
Kym’ or ‘Mama Kym’ among her son’s friends and ‘Cool Auntie’ to her nephews and
niece, passed away peacefully to begin her journey on the other side Monday,
December 19, 2022. Kym fought the good fight with a year’s long battle with colorectal
cancer. She transitioned in the comfort of her home surrounded by her son, brother,
mother, and father.
Kym was born on January 4, 1971 in Seoul, South Korea . She spent her early years
growing up on Air Force bases in South Korea, Japan, New York, and Virginia. As a
youth, she excelled at gymnastics and had a wonderful ear for music. She enjoyed
playing guitar and violin. Kym spent most of her childhood growing up in Newport
News, Virginia where she made lifelong friendships and memories.
As an adult, Kym joined the U.S. Army where she was able to travel the world while
serving her country. It was there where she grew a true fondness for traveling and
appreciating international cultures. After her tour in the military, Kym flourished in her
career as a cyber-security manager at the Defense Logistics Agency in Fort Belvoir, VA
where she earned numerous accolades and awards. She also earned undergraduate
and Master’s degrees during these times.
Of all her many accomplishments, her proudest by far was the birth of her son, Daevion
Kedin Charles. She absolutely loved being his mother. Kym loved to travel with her
son to places such as Mexico, Amsterdam, Israel, France, and Greece just to name a
few. She also never missed any of Daevion’s many sporting events. She would often
drive through states or fly him cross country so that he could participate at the highest
levels and so that she could cheer and shout words of encouragement directly to him
and his teammates. Kym loved spending as much time as she could with her son and
was so very proud of the man that he has become and will continue to be.
Kym is survived by son, Daevion; father Franklin; mother Song; sibling Dedin; nephews
Noah, Isaiah; niece Breanna; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins.
Kym, knowing that you have done right with your time on this earth, may you rest in
paradise. You finished the race here; you kept the faith. Where He continues to lead
you, go.
