To her loved ones still alive: Peace and my condolences be with you all on Eris's passing! I've actually thought of her a few times the past couple of years, wondering where she had ended up. "Miss Mattingly" (to us 5th graders in the Dhahran Senior Staff School in 1967) was probably the only African-American teacher most of us had had in the Aramco Senior Staff compound in Saudi Arabia up to that point. And she left an indelible, life-long mark on most of us. She had almost a religious fervor in her commitment to making us love books and reading, and read aloud to us day by day, page by page, the children's classics: Stewart Little, Charlotte's Web, the original Boxcar Children. I can still remember the names 55 years later! She also catered to our love of painting and making messes, having us paint murals on huge sheets of brown paper. I remember doing New England states with Gill White. Very neatly and carefully. No mess. We wanted to do a good job for her! I remember her tall, smiling yet firm in her expectations of good behavior from Aramco brats! Aramco was blessed with so many great teachers! Eris was one of my top 3. What a legacy!
