Edward Thomas Coughlin, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed
away on December 24, 2025, at 90 years old. Born on April 27, 1935, to Edward and Helen
Coughlin, Ed grew up in Milton, Massachusetts, alongside his two brothers, Jack and Richard,
forming lifelong bonds that shaped his early years.
Ed graduated from Milton High School, where he earned a varsity letter in golf. He spent many
afternoons caddying at the local golf club, earning spending money and deepening his lifelong
appreciation for the game. He went on to attend Bentley University, where he earned a degree in accounting, laying the foundation for a long and dedicated professional career.
Following college, Ed enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served for two years
aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid. His service took him throughout Europe, where he
delighted in searching for Hummel figurines to bring home, thoughtfully contributing to his
mother’s treasured collection.
Ed’s favorite place to be was Cape Cod, ankle-deep in sandy waters quahogging with his brother Jack. It was there that he met the love of his life, Kathleen. With his tall good looks and
sparkling blue eyes —accented by his white convertible—Ed quickly caught Kathy’s eye. They
were married on October 15, 1960, and began their life together in Milton, Massachusetts. They
welcomed twins Ed and Jeanne in 1961, followed by daughter Karen in 1962.
Ed’s work with the U.S. Department of Agriculture brought the family to the Washington, D.C.,
area, where they settled in the Fort Hunt neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia. Ed believed
deeply in the importance of agriculture and was passionate in his support for farmers – especially dairy farmers – whose hard work feeds and nourishes families across the country. His career was more than a profession; it was a calling rooted in respect and gratitude for the essential role farmers play in sustaining our lives.
Life was full and busy as Ed and Kathy continued to grow their family and welcomed daughter
Mary in 1965, daughter Carolyn in 1967, and son Stephen in 1971.
A devoted and hands-on father, Ed was deeply involved in his children’s lives. He coached youth sports and was a constant presence on soccer sidelines, baseball and softball fields, and at high school track meets, always offering encouragement and support.
After retiring from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Ed continued his professional career with
the National Milk Producers Federation. Throughout his working years, he was known for his
integrity, dedication, and strong work ethic.
When his professional career concluded, Ed discovered a deep passion for cycling, often seen
riding the scenic Mount Vernon Parkway trails. A disciplined and accomplished rider, he proudly
marked each birthday by biking his age in miles.
Ed and Kathy were founding members of Good Shepherd Catholic Church and were deeply
devoted to their faith. Ed was especially renowned for his beautiful singing voice. His heartfelt rendition of “Danny Boy” was mesmerizing and remains an unforgettable gift to all who heard
it.
Ed’s greatest pride and joy were his 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, who
affectionately knew him as “Pops.” Each was lovingly cradled in his arms and comforted by his
voice. Ed took great pleasure following their academic, athletic, and professional
accomplishments. He was always eager for updates on their lives and celebrated every milestone, big or small.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage; his six
children and their spouses; his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his dear
brother, Jack. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Helen Coughlin, and his brother,Richard.
Ed will be remembered for his deep devotion to his family and faith and his legacy lives on
through the many lives he touched and the family he dearly loved.
A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, January 20 at 10:30 am at Good Shepherd Roman
Catholic Church at 8710 Mount Vernon Hwy, Alexandria, VA. A reception for family and friends
will follow in the church hall. Ed’s ashes will be interred at Quantico National Cemetery, where
he will be laid to rest with honor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ed’s memory to
the Alzheimer’s Association, a cause close to the family’s heart.
