Duane Thomas Winn was born on September 7, 1954 to Tommy and Joyce Winn in Newport News, Virginia. A true Virginian, he attended the University of Virginia with a Navy ROTC scholarship. After graduating in 1976, he started his Navy career and deployed globally, but continued to be homebased in his beloved Commonwealth. He left active duty in 1984 and served in the Navy Reserves until he retired in 1996 with 20 years. Duane continued to work for the Navy as a civilian at the Office of Naval Intelligence, retiring in 2017 with 41 total years of service.
Duane married Ann Margaret McNallly on September 22, 1984. It was love at first sight. They were blessed with a daughter, Stefanie, and a son, Tyler. He was a loving dad who helped with homework, attended many soccer, softball, basketball games and swim meets, cheering the kids on and volunteering where needed. He proudly watched Stefanie (VCU, 2012) and Tyler (CNU, 2019) graduate from college and start their adult lives. He lovingly gave his daughter in marriage to Aaron Blomberg in 2015. Duane’s family was always his priority. Family always included a Boxer pup and Duane was “leader of the pack,” patiently training each pup.
Duane passed away on December 31, 2022 after a 5-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He died peacefully at home with his family surrounding him as was his wish. Many family and friends joined us in vigil during his last days, lighting candles in their homes to light his way to Eternal Life.
Duane loved to read, play strategy games, and go to Disney World. His family will continue to keep his spirit alive with these hobbies.
Duane leaves behind his beloved wife of 38 years, Ann; his children, Stefanie and Tyler; his much-loved son-in-law, Aaron; and sister, Dyane Winn and her wife Beth Trader. He was the son-in-law of Susan McNally; and brother-in-law to James McNally (Sela), Charles McNally (Laura), Mary Beth Reisig (Paul), Paul McNally (Theresa), Thomas McNally (Diane), Christopher McNally (Kim), and Patrick McNally (Marie). His large, extended family includes 6 nephews and 10 nieces and 7 great-nephews and 2 great-nieces.
