John Robert Moon, SR.
“Granky / Bernie / Gum”
July 3rd, 1957 – June 25, 2025
On June 25,2025, John Robert Moon, a cherished son, brother, father, uncle, & friend, passed away peacefully in Northern Virginia at the age of 67. Born on July 3rd, 1957 in the town of
Ithaca, NY to his parents Thomas Tucker Moon, Sr. & Mary Catherine Moon. John lived a life full of laughter, love for others, and adventure. He would always be the first person to jump in and help if he could.
John was a man of many talents and passions. From a young age, his athletic prowess was evident. He excelled in soccer, baseball, and basketball during his youth and teenage years in Lima, New York.
His passion for sports was only matched by his love for the outdoors. An avid outdoorsman who loved golf, hunting, fishing, & camping. When he was not working he was outdoors with his
three children often taking them on fishing trips or teaching them outdoor skills. His hobbies reflected his quiet and loving nature, a man who would shelter the world from negativity if he could.
John Moon had the largest heart that anyone could imagine. He cared for his family more than anything in the world. His greatest accomplishment was raising three beautiful and successful children. He was not a rich man in a monetary sense but was rich with love for his family. He always made sure to take the time to send special cards & make phone calls on important days just so the person would feel loved. His heart was made of gold.
John is survived by his children, Ashley (Michael) Butler, Johnny Robert Moon JR; his grandsons Rhett Michael Butler, Jacob Eaiden Moon, & Jeffery Jace Moon. He is also survived by his parents Thomas Tucker Moon, Sr. & Mary Catherine Moon of Lima, New York; his siblings Thomas (Karen) Tucker Moon, Jr. , Susan (Craig) Marie Fraser, Catherine Ann Moon. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, & great nieces & nephews. John was preceded in death by his son Jeffrey Jacob Moon & sister Diane Moon Fields.
John requested no memorial or church service. He would like for everyone to spread the message of Mesothelioma Cancer & what it is doing to innocent people.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to be made to St Jude’s Hospital; a cause that was close to John’s heart.
Not only did John leave behind structures he built with his bare hands but a lifetime of love, family commitment, & encouragement.
John’s legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, family, & friends.
John 14:1:
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.”
