In Loving Memory of William Nelson
January 11, 1934 ~ January 5, 2025
William George Joe Nelson, affectionately known as “Bill,” passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones, on January 5, 2025, at 1:40 PM, at the age of 90.
He was the eldest of two sons, born on January 11, 1934, in Macon, Georgia, to the late William Nelson and Louise Mercer-Nelson.
In 1960, “Bill” moved to Washington, D.C., where he met and married the love of his life, Lexie Mae Bellamy. From this union were born three children. After Lexie’s passing in 1979, as a widower, “Bill” continued to love, care for and raise his three teenage children on his own.
“Bill” worked for the Department of Sanitation and Public Works for 21 years, retiring in 1995. In the early 1990s, his life took a positive turn when he began seriously studying the Bible. The beautiful truths he discovered touched his heart, filling him with hope and a deep love for Jehovah God and His Son, Jesus Christ. On June 26, 1993, he dedicated his life to Jehovah and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
He loved sharing the Bible’s teachings with his family, friends, and others. He pioneered for one year. When he could no longer participate in the door-to-door ministry, he joined the Zoom ministry with friends. His favorite scriptures were James 4:6, Jeremiah 10:23, and Psalm 83:18.
“Bill” was also a devoted father and grandfather who cherished spending time with his family. His hobbies included crafting unique handmade belts and jewelry from stainless steel and copper, cooking, drawing, gardening, bike and motorcycle riding, and he loved animals.
He was known for his collard greens and cornbread and enjoyed making his homemade “pizzo pie” as he called it. Being a foodie with a sweet tooth, he enjoyed cooking. Some of his favorite foods were crab cakes, okra, watermelon, bananas, grapes, beans, especially the butter beans from South Carolina and the famous Hines Black Walnut ice cream.
He loved exploring thrift stores and strolling around Walmart. His favorite color was hunter green, and he loved Stacy Adams shoes. Some of his favorite TV shows included Bob Ross the Painter, Emeril Live, the Nature Channel, The Price Is Right and he enjoyed watching Westerns, football, and JW Broadcasting with his son-in-law, Edward.
“Bill” was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lexie Mae Bellamy-Nelson; his son, William (Randy) Nelson; his only brother, Linwood Nelson; his Bible teacher, Robert Snyder; and his second wife, Betty McMullen. He leaves behind to cherish his memory two children: His Daughter, Vivian (Edward) and His Son, Anthony; Nine (9) Grandchildren: Terrie (Quinn), Darius (Robinne), William-Tank, Terrell Marie, Duriel (Shaunise), William-RandyRan, Jaiden, Madison, and Luke; Sixteen (16) Great-Grands: Porsha (Marcez), Patience, Arianna, Paige, Zayvion, Quayla, Amelia, Quinn Jr., Princess, Alyce, Monique, Jahlil, Elijah, Breiyan, Yasari, and Khyli; One (1) Great-Great Granddaughter: Payton; Three (3) Nieces: Sabrina, Katrina (Charles), Tanya; Two (2) Nephews: Aaron (Loretta) and Anthony; One (1) Long-Time Friend: Mr. Cooper and a host of family and friends near and far including a worldwide brotherhood.
