Thomas Michael Palmieri died Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at home in Woodbridge, Virginia. He was 81 years old.
Tom was born March 14, 1943, in Irvington, New Jersey, where he spent his youth. He graduated from St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, NJ, and received his BA in physics from Rutgers, Newark.
In 1965 he married his high school sweetheart, Pasqualin (Patricia) Torsiello, and the two headed to the University of Wisconsin where Tom completed a Ph.D. in Physics.
Tom did research and published papers on x-ray astronomy. He worked at various government labs in California and New Mexico and spent a year at the research lab in Saclay, France, where he especially enjoyed the long lunch breaks.
Tom spent his later career working for the federal government at the Office of Management and Budget, and then at the Department of Energy in DC and finally in Los Alamos, NM.
He enjoyed his retirement-years travelling, reading history, listening to classical music, attending operas and plays, and explaining scientific issues to his family and friends.
He will be sorely missed by his wife, Pasqualin, who has loved him for more than the 59 years she was married to him, his daughter Cristina and her wife Heather, his son Thomas, his grandchild Ceciliana, his brother Michael and his wife Susan and many cousins and friends.
