Robert Michael Turner, 84, passed away unexpectedly at home on June 24, 2024. Born May 2,
1940 In Baltimore, Maryland, Bob was the son of Harry M. Turner and Virginia M. Turner. Both
his father, an aeronautical engineer, and his mother, a teacher, encouraged him to explore and
expand his many wide-ranging interests. He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Susan
Thomson Turner, two children – Robert Thomson Turner (Julie) and Cara Turner Slevin (Frank),
five grandchildren – Grace, Austin, Samuel, William and Cameron, a sister Mary Alice Bonner,
along with his beloved nieces, a nephew and cousins.
Growing up in Towson, Maryland, Bob enjoyed an active childhood. He spent summer
vacations with his extended family at their summer home on Lake Hopatcong in New Jersey.
There he enjoyed fishing, swimming, water skiing, sailing and just the right amount of mischief
with his beloved cousins. At home, he discovered his love of baseball while playing on several
competitive teams before joining the varsity baseball team at Towson High School.
After high school graduation in 1958, he studied Electrical Engineering at Duke University where
he also enjoyed pitching and playing third base on the baseball team. Playing for his team at
the NCAA College Baseball World Series in 1961 was the highlight of his baseball career.
Subsequently, he turned down an offer to play in the Baltimore Orioles farm system. However,
Bob continued his passion for the game by coaching many of his son Rob’s Little League
teams. Recently, he has enjoyed live-streaming his grandson’s college baseball games.
Following college graduation, Bob was hired by IBM Corporation and worked for two years
before joining the U.S. Navy as an officer who served aboard the USS Albany, a guided missile
cruiser. Before his release from active duty in 1967, he was stationed for a brief time in the D.C.
area where he met and married Susan.
After serving in the military, Bob returned to IBM while earning an MS degree in Computer
Science from George Washington University. After a thirty-year career with IBM, Bob retired as
a Systems Engineer in the Federal Systems Division. For several years thereafter, he worked
for CEXEC, Inc., an information and management service firm.
Throughout his life, Bob was an active volunteer in several organizations. These included years
of working with the AARP tax preparation program, and serving in several capacities for his
homeowners association and Vienna Presbyterian Church. He was quick to help a friend or
stranger in need
Bob was a man of many talents and interests. He was a gifted piano and guitar player who
loved music, especially jazz. He was a life-long lover of both playing and watching golf and was
a fearless skier who conquered slopes in the U.S. and Europe. Bob loved traveling, jogging,
hiking, gardening, bird watching, working crossword puzzles, and exploring the great outdoors
on long walks with Susan. He was a spirited fan who cheered on his beloved Baltimore Orioles
and Duke Blue Devils.
Bob will be remembered as a gentle, loving, kind, and thoughtful family man. He was a true
gentleman with a strong moral compass, great humility, and quick-witted humor. His life was
well-lived as a beloved husband, father, PopPop, and friend. He will be sorely missed by all
who knew and loved him.
