Michael Scott Dolton, beloved father, brother, friend and colleague, died at his home in Alexandria, Virginia, surrounded by family, on January 30, 2026, after a three-year battle with prostate cancer. He was 70 years old.
Born in Norwalk, Connecticut on May 14, 1955, Mike was the third of five children born to Fred and Jean Dolton. His father was an international businessman who moved the family abroad for much of Mike’s early life. The family lived in Brussels, Tokyo and The Hague, where Mike graduated from the American School. Those years in the Netherlands were especially meaningful to Mike, from traveling around Europe to exploring local spots, riding motorbikes and getting into shenanigans with siblings and friends. He graduated from Ithaca College in 1978 with a degree in romance languages.
Mike began his career in communications, public relations and marketing in Columbus, Ohio, where he became a lifelong Ohio State fan. He later moved to Northern Virginia and worked for several companies, including Signal Corporation, where he was vice president of corporate communications.
He joined AMERICAN SYSTEMS, an employee-owned government contractor, in May 2006. He retired in early January 2026 as director of corporate communications, where he oversaw all advertising, public relations, employee communications, executive messaging, trade shows and events. In nearly 20 years there, Mike played an instrumental role in shaping and developing the company’s communications strategies, branding efforts and corporate accolades.
Mike was an avid fan of all DC sports teams, but especially the Commanders. He loved playing and watching golf and was a big fan of the LPGA. And as a lifelong skier, he looked forward to cheering on Mikaela Shiffrin in the Winter Olympics.
Mike loved the beach, vacationing in Sandbridge, Virginia for more than 50 years alongside multiple generations. His fondest memories were evenings on the deck, watching the sun set over the ocean with family and a fortified beverage in hand.
To know Mike is to know he was a devoted fan of Bruce Springsteen for 50 years. He attended countless concerts, knew the words of nearly every song and even had the great good fortune to cross paths with the Boss and the E Street Band in the mid-70s in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
He was predeceased by his parents and his older brother, Peter. He is survived by his two daughters, whom he adored: Taylor Vennetti and her wife, Steph, and Macy; his former wife and dear friend, Tamara Chapman; his sister, Jayne Dolton Shaw, and her husband, Brian; his two brothers, Douglas and his wife, Gail, and David and his wife, Sue; and many nieces and nephews, to whom he was simply known as “Uncle Mike.”
Mike had a positive and profound impact on everyone he met. He will be remembered for his genuine kindness, quick wit, thoughtful grace, good humor and the unconditional love and support he provided for his daughters and many others.
There will be a celebration of Mike’s life on Saturday, May 16, in Northern Virginia at a location and time to be announced later. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Mike’s honor should be made to Capital Caring Health, the Prostate Cancer Foundation or an organization of your choice.
