Fred Wulff passed away on December 17, 2024 at the age of 88 in Arlington, Virginia. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 24, 1936 to Lelia Haller Wulff and Fred A. Wulff, Jr.
Fred is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Judith White Wulff and three sons, William (Kathy) of Middletown, Maryland; Thomas (Suzanne) of Silver Spring, Maryland; Robert (Lara) of Annandale, Virginia; grandchildren Alexander Wulff, Molly Wulff, Halle Wulff, and Caroline Wulff; and nieces Debbe Bollinger and Cynthia Waters. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Barbara Willard.
Fred grew up in New Orleans. He managed a paper route and helped out in his mother’s ballet school starting and stopping the record player for classes/rehearsals. He studied violin and enjoyed a life-long love of music. He graduated from Alceé Fortier High School in 1953 and entered ROTC at Tulane University, studying Electrical Engineering. He graduated in 1957 and entered the United States Marine Corps. He served three years with one tour in Okinawa and earned the rank of Captain before leaving for civilian life.
Fred and Judy were married in Annandale, VA on June 11, 1960. Fred worked for General Electric as a field engineer in various locations in North Carolina, Virginia and Pennsylvania. After GE, Fred went to work for NASA at Goddard Space Flight Center, and then later as manager of a satellite tracking station in Santiago, Chile from 1971- 1975. He was active on the troop committee and later Scoutmaster of BSA Troop 1 in Santiago. The troop had many adventures hiking and camping in the Andes Mountains.
The family returned to the United States in 1975 and settled in Severna Park, Maryland, while Fred worked at Goddard and then NASA headquarters in downtown Washington, DC. After 21 years at NASA, Fred spent several years at Voice of America, Engineering Operations before retiring in 1996.
While living in Severna Park, Fred enjoyed sailing small boats out of Annapolis. When he moved to Annandale, he bicycled to work in DC, sang with the NOVA Community Chorus and was a member of John Calvin Presbyterian Church. He was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA), served on session and sang with the choir. Fred led an active life and will be missed by all who knew him.
A Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance will be held at John Calvin Presbyterian Church, 6531 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA on February 1, 2025 at 1 PM.
