Frank X Hopkins, age 71, transitioned to his heavenly home on November 27, 2022 from his home in Alexandria, VA, with the help of hospice and his loved ones Barbara Hopkins, and their children Ryan Hopkins (CA) and Jennifer Hopkins (VA). Frank was born in North Platte, Nebraska, attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln earning his Bachelor’s degree, followed by University of Nebraska-Omaha & Lincoln earning a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice.
Frank worked at the Nebraska Department of Corrections from 1974 to May of 2015. He began as a Correctional Officer 1 and achieved the position of Deputy Director. Although he won many awards and accolades professionally and for his community work, what mattered the most was that colleagues and people serving time, knew him as a man of integrity, humanity and fairness. Mr. Hopkins mentored many colleagues who have become leaders in their profession.
Frank’s mentoring and service also extended to being a Sunday School teacher, church elder, TeamMates mentor, youth coach, Red Cross volunteer, LPS Foundation Board member, and dedicated blood donor. He and his family welcomed numerous young people into their home when there was a need for additional shelter, safety and love.
Favorite memories were created with friends playing softball, playing cards and canoeing. Frank was an avid reader who cherished reading to his grandsons.
Due to a car accident in 2009, Frank was dramatically impaired, but fought his way back to mobility thanks to family and many friends. His brave spirit, determination and tenacity led him to years of continuing to serve professionally and embracing life.
Retirement brought Frank great joy with a focus on his two grandchildren, Hayes Lee Foster and Corin Joseph Hopkins, while living in Alexandria, VA. Frank provided great safety and love to the family during COVID-19 as he took a key role in providing for their care.
Frank X Hopkins is survived by his beloved Barbara (Glass) Hopkins; son Ryan Hopkins of Los Angeles, CA; daughter Jennifer Hopkins (Joel Foster) and grandsons Hayes and Corin of Alexandria, VA; brothers Jim Hopkins (Deborah, Arizona) and Dennis Hopkins (Pam Curtis, Texas), nieces and nephews. He will join his mother Lenore Leonard Hopkins, sister Deborah Waring, and brother in law Greg Waring (all of North Platte, NE) in the hereafter.
Frank’s life will be celebrated in a private family service. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the National TeamMates Mentoring Program, 6800 “O” Street, Lincoln, Nebraska, 68510, or https://teammates.org/donate-now .
