Catherine Collins, a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend, passed away on April 8th, 2023, in Alexandria, Virginia, at the age of 79. Catherine was born on January 13th 1944, in Cork, Ireland, the youngest of four sisters, to parents Patrick and Mae (nee Kingston) Carey. In 1961, she left Ireland to study nursing in Chesterfield England; she worked as a nurse and midwife before emigrating to the United States. In the United States, she worked as a nurse in the New York City Region and married James Collins, a schoolteacher in White Plains. They had one son, Michael, a computer scientist in Alexandria, Va. In the 1980’s, she ran company producing hand-knit mittens for children. After raising her son, she returned to nursing, eventually working at the St. Agnes Children’s rehabilitation center where she cared for children with complex and rare diseases. Catherine was an active crafter and reader who loved mysteries and puzzles. She is survived by her son Michael, and her sisters Rita and Mai. Her ashes will be scattered in Cork in September.
