Betty Louise Thompson Cox, 91, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2024, in Springfield,
Virginia. Betty was born in Dayton Ohio, the daughter of James and Emma Banks Thompson.
Betty grew up in Xenia and Wilberforce, Ohio alongside her siblings Cordelia Marie, Carol
Jean, and Lucy Ann.
Betty found love early in life with Charles Percy Cox, who was attending Wilberforce
University, and Payne Theological Seminary. They married at the East Main St. Christian
Church in Xenia, Ohio in an intimate ceremony on June 10, 1949, shortly after Charles was
commissioned in the U.S. Army.
For 40 years, Betty and Charles were the consummate Army family,
moving often and welcoming three children along the way: Donald,
Cassandra, and Alan. Betty easily found friends in every new duty
station from Formosa in the Orient, Germany in Europe, and Tunisia in
North Africa. They retired to Annandale, Virginia.
Betty had an extraordinary gift for cooking, and hosting. She also spoke
French, and volunteered at the Smithsonian, and for fifty plus years, the
American Red Cross. Her home was always warm and welcoming, filled
with family and enjoyment.
Betty was predeceased by Charles Percy Cox, her siblings Carol Jean, Lucy Ann, and daughter
Cassandra Louise Green. She is survived by her sister Cordelia Hill in Wilberforce, Ohio, and
children Donald & Alan (Jan) Cox, grandchildren: Julian (Caroline) Cox, Duncan Green, Meryl
(Dyami) Pipkin, and great-grandchildren, Kevin Shiels, Charlotte & Theodore Cox, and
Harrison Pipkin.
Betty attended the Little River United Church of Christ in Annandale, Virginia, and will be laid
to rest at Massies Creek Cemetery, Cedarville, (near Wilberforce) Ohio, with her daughter
Cassandra Louise Green and by her sister Lucy Ann Johnson.
Betty will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved her.
May Betty Louise Thompson Cox rest in peace.
