On Wednesday, May 27, 2020, Barry James Spangler, loving husband and father, passed away peacefully at his home in Arlington, Virginia, at the age of 74.
Barry was born in Somerset, Pennsylvania on September 8, 1945, to Ray Melvin Spangler and Dorothy Louise (Hugg) Spangler. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from the University of Baltimore, and his Master of Business Administration from Johns Hopkins University. He completed his degrees during his 41-year career with Westinghouse Electric Corp., later Northrop Grumman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his wife, Kathryn Anne Street, sons Christopher (Tory) and Jason (Suzie), their mother, first wife Sherry (Swineford) Spangler, and his brother John Allen “CJ” Spangler. He is also survived by his faithful dog Eli, who rarely left his side.
Barry was an avid fisherman, and he enjoyed annual fly-fishing trips to the Bitterroot River Valley in Montana, as well as frequent trips on the Chesapeake Bay, when rockfish were in season. He was also active in the Westgrove dog park in Alexandria, including serving as chair of the board of directors.
With current restrictions on gatherings in mind, a memorial service is not planned at this time. Please feel free to share your fond memories of Barry below. Donations can be made to the non-profit Westgrove PACK, LLC in his memory.
Barry’s family wishes to recognize his many friends, near and far, including the members of the Westgrove PACK, the Somerset Area High School class of 1963, and particularly his neighbors Joe and Willett Bunton, for their support and kindness during this difficult time.
